Girls Take 5th, Boys 6th at Williamston Invite

Continuing a trend this spring, the Notre Dame Track teams faced not only difficult weather conditions at the Williamston Invitational at Williamston High School, but also some challenging competition.  The Irish athletes persevered though once again and delivered some great performances. The boys team placed sixth out of 13 teams.  Leading the way was the 4x100m relay team consisting of seniors Aidan Schurig, Patrick Anger, Brendan O’Sullivan, and Matthew Durkin.  The group placed first in the event with a time of 44.61.  Later, the same foursome would finish second in the 4x200m relay, breaking the school record in the process with a time of 1:34.82.  Durkin and O’Sullivan also placed in the 200m dash, third (24.24) and seventh (24.61), respectively, while Anger was fourth in the long jump at 19’ 11.25”.  Durkin closed out his day with a tie for fifth in the high jump at 5’ 10”. In his only race of the day, senior Nathan Mylenek was the meet’s 800m winner with a time of 1:59.29. Junior Brendan Fraser placed second in the 1600m run in 4:36.23 while junior John Paul Terzano rounded out the scoring with a sixth place finish in the discus after a toss of 128’ 3”.    The girls team placed fifth out of 10 teams, mostly thanks to senior Claire Bolden who continued her torrid pace in a breakout season.  Bolden easily won the three sprint events; the 100m dash (13.93), the 200m dash (27.64), and the 400m dash (59.71).  Bolden also combined with sophomore Maddie Scherle, senior Lauren Kavanagh, and sophomore Lauren Neiheisel for second place in the 4x400m relay (4:22.88). In the 800m run, Neiheisel finished second with a time of 2:22.42 and freshman Lexie Case was eighth in 2:35.98.  Case also ran the 1600m run, using a surge in the final 20 meters of the race to finish third in 5:39.13.  Sophomore Katelyn Kozole made it to the 200m dash final and finished eighth in 30.71 and sophomore Abby Rankin was eighth in the 3200m run with a time of 13:10.05. In relays, the girls 4x100m team consisting of Kozole, senior Chanel Dore, freshman Paige Gollinger, and senior Caitlyn Fitzgerald placed fifth in 54.47.  Sophomore Destiny Sandle joined Kozole, Gollinger, and Fitzgerald in the 4x200m relay for fifth in 1:58.26. Both teams now enter the championship part of their schedules.  Next up is the regional meet on Saturday to be followed by the CHSL Championships next Tuesday, and the Oakland County Championships next Friday.
