The Notre Dame Boys Varsity Swim team pulled out a narrow 85-83 victory Tuesday against the Holly Bronchos.
The odds were stacked against the Irish as they were outnumbered two to one, with host Holly having 18 swimmers and Notre Dame only putting nine on the blocks. Coach McGreevy said, “We discussed the situation prior to meet. We decided that even though we don’t have the numbers, we are going to take a bite out of this team. Let’s do our best and not give in because our chances are slim.” The boys placed first in eight of 11 events, taking all three relays to seal the victory.
Sophomores Griffin Gushman, Sam Burek and Lars Boehme placed first in each of their individual events and teamed with freshman Anthony Dupuis to win their two relays. Dupuis joined Cole Bennett, Matt DeAngelis and Giuseppe Fregoli to bring home the win in the 200 free relay. It was an ,exciting meet that went down to the final relay where the Irish placed first and third to edge out Holly and take the victory. Notre Dame will be hosting their next meet Wednesday against Dearborn.
“The boys really came through and would not give up. 2nd and 3rd place finishes were key to the victory,” added coach McGreevy.“This was a real team effort. It’s a great start for such a small team. Now we get to work and focus on the rest of the season.”
