The Notre Dame Varsity Competitive Cheer team was back at it on Saturday, earning a second place at the Cougar Spirit Invitational hosted by Stoney Creek. The competition, which includes a long list of elite cheer schools, is referred to by many as the “mini-state” tournament.
Although the Irish girls were still recovering from setbacks caused by illnesses and injuries, the team started the late afternoon competition with an impressive round one score of 233.4. The score wasn’t enough to start on top, though, landing just 2.5 points behind rival Richmond who posted a 235.9. Monroe Jefferson stayed close in 3rd with a score of 231.4.
The Notre Dame team continued their solid performance in round two, posting a score of 225.58 to move slightly further ahead of Monroe Jefferson, but still behind Richmond.
With the neon-clad fan section cheering loudly, the reigning State champs fought tremendously hard for points in round three hoping to take the lead spot. And although they earned a decent score of 312.80, it was not enough to move into first. The result was a bittersweet 2nd place finish with a total score of 771.78. Richmond ended in 1st place with a combined score of 785.7 while Monroe Jefferson took the 3rd place slot with a final score of 771.60.
The Irish will continue their season on January 26th, 2019, at Lake Orion.
