Seniors Lead Irish Over Avondale

Notre Dame Varsity Volleyball defeated Avondale 25-20, 25-7, 25-15 on parent appreciation and senior night to extend its winning streak to 41 straight matches. The win also kept the Irish unbeaten at home (11-0) on the year.

Seniors Maddy Chinn (Purdue), Maria Famularo (Slippery Rock) and Natalie Risi (Ball State) have amassed an impressive 215-27-13 record during their time on the court at Notre Dame. On their home court, the class of 2019 is 49-1 with the only loss coming to state champion Father Gabriel Richard in 2016.

In the first set the Yellow Jacket defense along with some Irish missed serves kept Avondale close until the Irish finally closed out the game with a thunderous kill by Chinn. The second set was all Notre Dame as the Irish fell behind 1-0 on the opening rotation error but then went on to build a 10-point lead before Avondale could get back on the board.  In the final set the Irish led from wire-to-wire to close out the victory. Chinn led the Irish attack with 15 kills, five service points including an ace, three blocks and 11 digs. Famularo served up 11 points with an ace, five kills, 10 digs and dished out 15 assists. Risi had eight kills and three digs. Junior Emily Mohr served a season-high 10 points with three aces while classmate Theresa Carrier chipped in three blocks. Sophomore Olivia Kowalkowski scored nine points at the line and added 10 digs to her team leading totals.
