Marist Academy Pontiac Campus: Grades 6-8

Marist Academy Middle School is An IB Middle Years Programme World Candidate School

Current Academic Program
Students are required to take Religion, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Technology.  In sixth grade, students are required to take Band or Chorus. Elective courses available for selection to complete a student's schedule include: Exploratory Art, Instrumental Music, Chorus, Modern Languages (Spanish or Mandarin Chinese) and Drama. Classes begin with prayer daily.  All courses are student-selected with the advice of a faculty/administrative advisor and approval of parents.

Faculty
Teachers are selected based on their ability to create a learning experience which is creative, disciplined. and meaningful. They also help in the development of a challenging curriculum within a respectful, Christian atmosphere.

Student Activities
Activities include: Band and Choral Concerts, Book Club, Camp Tamarack, Celebrating the Arts Week, Chess Club, Christian Service Program, Computer Club, CYO and Intramural Athletic Programs, Detroit Country Day Math Invitational, Detroit Free Press Writing Contest,  Drama Club, Environmental Club, Field Day, F.I.R.S.T. Lego League, Forensics, Friendship Club, Irish Week, Math Club, MathCounts, MathFax, Model United Nations, National Geographic Geography Bee, National Junior Honor Society, Newspaper, Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge, Rochester Community Service Awards, Scholastic Art Awards, Scholastic Olympics, Science Olympiad, Sociedad Hispanica de Amistad, Ski Club, Student Council, Student Leadership Service,  Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl, Videography Club, and Yearbook.

Interscholastic and intramural sports include football, wrestling, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, track, lacrosse, and cheerleading.

Sixth graders spend several days at Camp Tamarack for scientific and ecologic studies.

Seventh and eighth graders may go to Chicago and Washington DC, respectively, for their class trips. Parents, teachers, and administrators serve as chaperones.

Students enjoy educational field trips to professional plays, science centers, and museums every school year.

Involvement
Parental involvement is an integral part of the educational environment at Marist Academy. Support groups include Parent Club, Boosters, and the Arts Council.

Admission Policy
Admission to Marist Academy (Grades 6-8) is based upon a satisfactory record in the present school, fully completed application form with a $40 non-refundable application fee, IOWA placement test results, teacher recommendations, and an interview by the faculty admission committee.

Students applying to grades 6-8 are required to take the IOWA placement test on one of the following dates:  November 15, 2008; December 6, 2008; February 7, 2009.  Testing will be conducted at the Marist Academy Pontiac Campus.  Please call the school office to set up a testing date.

Alumni Children
Marist Academy offers middle school students, who are children of Harper Woods Notre Dame High School, Oakland Catholic. and Pontiac Catholic graduates, an Alumni Scholarship equal to 10% of the appropriate current tuition rate provided they meet the admission standards. If this alumni scholarship is accepted, no other internal academic scholarships or financial awards apply. This scholarship remains in effect as long as the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average and maintains a good disciplinary record.
