BUSINESS & COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Accounting 1 and 2

This introductory course in accounting, introduces students to the basics of the accounting system as it applies to the business world. Special emphasis is placed upon the creation and study of the concepts and basic steps for starting an accounting system for a proprietorship and partnership. Hands on applications include the recording of transactions, posting to ledger accounts, creating worksheets, adjusting and closing the records for a fiscal period, band reconciliation and check book maintenance. Business simulations are also used to enhance the student's knowledge of the entire accounting procedure.  Second semester continues the study of proper accounting procedures for business. Special emphasis during this course is corporate style accounting through the use of special journals. Recording transaction, posting, creating a worksheet and financial statements, closing and adjusting entries for a corporation will be practiced. The course will also focus on accounting procedures and concepts for sales, sales tax, and depreciation of assets, accounting for notes, accrued revenue and expenses. Preparation of tax records and a payroll system is also a main focus of the course. The use of computer technology and the creation of an automated accounting system are also practiced. Business simulations, both manually and automated, are also used to enhance the students' knowledge of the entire accounting procedure.

Entrepreneurship/Marketing

Students will be introduced to the many facets of business including Human Resources, Management, Accounting, Advertising, Sales, and Marketing.  Students will learn the basics of starting and running your own successful small business.  Marketing and the multimedia tools used in marketing will be concentrated on in this class.  Students will be exposed to basic web design as well as other components of digital media that businesses employ today.  They will use these tools to put together targeted market campaigns, create company logos, slogans, and multimedia campaigns to promote products and businesses.

Computer Applications

This Microsoft Office Suite class is a comprehensive course in business office practices with emphasis on industry standard computer operation and applications.  With Word students will create letters, memos, Web pages, newsletters and more.  Excel will be used to organize and calculate data, track financial data, and create charts and graphs.  With Power Point the student will learn to create dynamic on-screen presentations.
(May be taken for Computer Science graduation requirement - ONE SEMESTER CLASS)

Fundamentals of Computer Science

This one-semester, introductory course exposes students to a wide variety of computer technologies.  The course is split into three six-week components, covering (1) computer hardware and systems, (2) programming and (3) web/multi-media development.
(PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA 1)

Computer Programming

A first course in computer programming using Visual Studio. The syntax and commands of Visual Studio are studied by means of daily use of the computer. Common algorithms such as loops, accumulators, and input/output control are also studied.
(PREREQUISITE: ALGEBRA 1 WITH A MINIMUM "C" GRADE)

Introduction to Computer Aided Design (CAD I) Manufacturing

This course will utilize a student's creative, artistic, computer and mathematical abilities to create engineered parts and engineering drawings using a highly sophisticated modeling program software, Pro Engineer 2001. Most lecture time is dedicated to introducing students to the vocabulary, theory and practice of engineering/manufacturing as well as the operations in the specific software.

Digital Media/Photoshop

This semester course takes students beyond the basic office applications and exposes them to desktop publishing, graphic design, creating pod casts and web application software.  Students will use publishing software to create dynamic flyer's, catalogs, brochures, and many other business print media.  Students will create and manipulate images with Photoshop.

Web Design

The student will learn DreamWeaver software to produce and publish web pages on the internet.  These programs will enable the student to create and manage web pages.  The topics that will be covered include basic web concepts,  terminology, and web page design.  An introduction to JavaScript, language used to make and enhance web pages.  The students will bridge the gap between web programming languages and web architecture.
