Great showing for NDP choir at district solo and ensemble fest
Kudos to NDP’s Honors Ensemble for several stellar performances this fall/winter! In November the students were invited to perform at the Crittenton Hospital Gala at the Marriott Hotel in Troy. In December they were the featured entertainment at the Meadowbrook Women’s Club Christmas party at Cherry Creek Golf Club, and they “wowed the crowd” at the Zonta International Christmas party at Lochmoor Country Club in Grosse Pointe. We are proud these students show that the arts are alive and well at NDP!

The event was held at Waterford Kettering High School on March 9-10. The sixth-grade and seventh/eighth-grade choir and the school's concert chorale received an excellent rating at the event, which was held at Waterford Kettering High School. The honors chorus received a superior rating, a first time for the school.
Only four of the more than 50 choirs performing at the district festival last week received a superior rating
Choir Director Dave Fazzini describes the event and competition:
"Wow! What a fantastically busy and music-filled week it was. First, congratulations to our choirs for doing so well at district festival. All four groups received great scores and have been invited to perform at the state level! Three of the four groups received an excellent rating and the NDP honors chorus received our first superior rating ever!
"As some of you may not know, at district festival the choirs perform for four judges. Three judges rate their singing of two songs while the fourth judge rates them on their ability to sight read."
The judges scores are added up and the choir is rated using the following scale:
Superior 24 - 32 total from all four judges
Excellent 33 - 56 total from all four judges
Good 57 - 79 total from all four judges
Fair 80 - 107 total from all four judges
Poor 108 and up total from all four judges
The lower the score the better. NDPMA's four choirs received the following scores:
The honors chorus received a 30 (6 + 6 + 9 + 9) A 6 is a perfect score from a judge (or the lowest score they can give)
The concert chorale received a 40 (9 + 9 + 12 + 10)
The 7/8 grade chorus received a 51 (13 + 15 + 14 + 9)
The 6th grade received a 45 (14 + 11 + 11 + 9)
"We should be very proud," Fazzini said. "The rubric is very organized and the judges are tough. The students demonstrated excellent (and in one case superior) knowledge and application of a pretty complex skill set. The students also behaved very well. Yea, choirs!"
Next for the choirs is the state festival held at Jackson Community College, date TBD.
