Opportunities

PLEASE READ THIS SECTION BEFORE USING THE FOLLOWING LIST.

Introduction
The list of Community Service Opportunities is dated from March 2005. It is a means for students to pursue opportunities to complete their community service requirement of ten hours.

Please remember the following when using the list:

1. This list was put together to help students pursue opportunities for community service. Some of these institutions are looking for people to volunteer more than ten hours. At the same time, these institutions depend on people being available on a regular basis. Some require training before a person can be a volunteer. And some of these institutions have an age requirement.

2. Contacting an institution is no guarantee of placement into a program for volunteer service.

3. Think carefully and be realistic about your capabilities. If you do not do well under pressure then some experiences are not for you. Be creative in thinking about your options.

4. Some other options to help you in pursuing volunteer positions are: contact your local parish church as they often have youth programs and service programs for youth. Check with local libraries and ask about programs that might need volunteers. Reading to little children through your local libraries is a wonderful program and the folks at libraries might know of tutoring opportunities or be able to put you in touch with other volunteer organizations in your local community.

5. Volunteering should help you broaden your experience. Don't be afraid to consider doing something new and different. This year's community service might lead you to a new understanding about yourself, your abilities, and your likes and dislikes.

6. An increasing number of colleges and universities are looking at community service performed in high school as part of their criteria for acceptance. You might want to think about a long-term program of volunteering.
