Eagle Scout junior

Nalin Fox is the 18th from Notre Dame in recent years to receive rare honor.

Notre Dame junior Nalin Fox recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts of America. According to BSA, only about 4 percent of the nearly three million scouts nationwide earn Eagle Scout status.

Fox is the 18th from Notre Dame Prep to receive Eagle Scout status and joins fellow NDP student Kalan Hand, also a junior, and alums John Kenny, Austin Greif, Kevin Cragg, Logan Hand, William Ballew, Anthony VanDieren, Logan Verheyen, Brennan Eagle, Tyler Obear, Ryan Flaherty, Ryan Dau, Erik Egner, Connor Verheyen, Jack Stouffer, Joe Lombardo and Peter Dondanville who have received such an honor.

For his Eagle Scout project, Fox built handicap accessible picnic tables for Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve, a nonprofit nature center that provides environmental education programs in Rochester.

Fox said he welcomed the news about getting his Eagle Scout status.

"When I found out I had earned the Eagle rank, I was very relieved and glad that all my years of hard work finally had paid off," he said.

Fox, who has been in scouting for many years, also is looking forward to his senior year at Notre Dame and beyond.

"Besides my years in scouting, I believe my time at NDP so far also has really shaped me into the person I am today," he said. "The experiences that I've had and the friends that I've made here have changed my life definitely for the better."

As far as his future beyond high school, Fox already has a few things in mind.

"I'd really like to play football in college, most likely here in Michigan at a D1 or D2 school," said Fox, who was an offensive tackle and defensive end for the Fighting Irish this past season. "As far as a career, I've always had an interest in working in government, so that would be my preferred job."

His football coach thinks highly of him and believes he will go far in life.

"Nalin Fox is a great worker who already has set the mark this off-season in the weight room," Irish head coach Patrick Fox (no relation) said. "He is a great young man who defines the school's mission and is a leader on and off the field."
