ENGLISH

English 6
Students learn and practice writing skills and apply them to the writing process. In grade six, focus is placed on spelling, punctuation, grammar, formation of clear topic sentences, and writing five to nine sentence paragraphs.

Literature 6
Students are introduced to literature and integrated studies in a multi-dimensional program. They explore the natural links between literature and other areas. Some of the themes that students explore in sixth grade include making adjustments, challenges, and facing problems. Writing Workshop lessons provide students with options for writing about literature and life. The importance of reading and writing is heightened within the literature curriculum. Five to seven novels are read and discussed throughout the school year.

English 7
In grade seven, students learn to write reflectively and confidently through personal expression. Journal writing and self-expression are two methods utilized in the writing process this year. Dictionary and vocabulary work are integrated into much of the writing application. Punctuation, grammar, and spelling continue to be emphasized. Students learn descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing. Empowered to be active learners, students also experience literature that mirrors the mode of writing being taught. Students are introduced to more well-defined research and report writing techniques.

Literature 7
Students are presented with literature ranging from in-depth multi-cultural explorations to integration that includes interdisciplinary study to a strong focus on media and visual literacy. Classic and modern literature are presented in an innovative thematic style. Writing workshops present assignments based on the literature. Critical thinking, literary and vocabulary skills are stressed on a daily basis. Students read five to seven novels throughout the year.

English 8
Students master the descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing techniques learned in grade seven. Spelling, usage, mechanics, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary are reinforced within the writing process. Students continue to express personal reflections in their journals. Writing across the curriculum is emphasized so students may meet their writing goals effectively, imaginatively, and efficiently. Strategies and background information support critical thinking, cultural diversity, and cross-curricular connections. Oral presentations and cooperative lessons are integrated into the curriculum. Students will continue to learn the importance of the various types of media research for future writing assignments.

Literature 8
In eighth grade, integration moves beyond the language arts to include other content areas. Students are provided with selections blending cross-curricular content with language arts. Studies in history, sociology, psychology, geography, math, and careers are explored in a thematic presentation. Students in eighth grade are challenged with in-depth writing experiences in a variety of modes, more opportunities for self-expression, and assessment through research, short papers, tests, projects, and dramatic presentations. Seven to eight novels are read and discussed.
