NDP SCAMP Soccer camp
Clarkston, July 19, 2007
What started last year as a way for members of the Notre Dame Prep Soccer Team to obtain community service hours has turned into something they love doing. The NDP SCAMP Soccer camp is being run by 16 year old Junior, Emily Gray from Clarkston and assisting her is Paige Aiello from Rochester Hills, also a Junior. Emily worked with her mother last year to put the soccer program together for SCAMP. This year a mission statement was created to give more direction to their effort. The statement reads: To give each SCAMPer the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game of soccer by sharing our time, talent and love for the sport.
“The SCAMPers love coming! One of the groups has come three times already. We recognize some of the SCAMPers from last year, its fun getting to know them more each time we see them.” Gray said. It is their hope that the soccer program can continue to grow with more volunteers so they can offer additional sessions. The Plymouth Elks Lodge #1780 generously donated 12 boxes of foam soccer balls for SCAMP this year. The girls use them in their soccer program and give them away at the end. “Their faces light up when we tell them they can take the soccer balls home with them!” said Aiello. The NDP group runs four sessions a day, a half hour each, on Mondays and Wednesdays. The girls work with children and young adults ranging in age from 6 to 45. The soccer program has had over 180 SCAMPers attend so far this summer with 2 more sessions to go.
Clarkston SCAMP provides recreational activities to special needs children and young adults from all over Oakland and Southern Genesee counties.
