Notre Dame Prep students dual-enrolled with the University of Detroit Mercy in CAD classes spend day at its College of Engineering and Science.

Notre Dame Prep was the first high school in the world to utilize Dassault Systèmes’ 3-D Experience platform, including CATIA, DELMIA, SIMULIA, and ENOVIA. Since 2013, students in the school's CAD curriculum also have had an opportunity to engage with the University of Detroit Mercy in a dual enrollment program with its College of Engineering and Science department.

Last week, computer science teacher Katrina Palushaj accompanied a number of dual-enrolled NDP students to Detroit Mercy for a day to experience what it's like in a university-level CAD program. According to Palushaj, students in Intermediate Computer Aided Design (CATIA) and Advance Computer Aided Design (CATIA) had a chance to experience in a college-level lab what they learn in the classroom.

The benefits of dual enrollment are immense, according to Detroit Mercy.

"Participating students fulfill their high school diploma through the program, while earning valuable college credit and experiencing life on a college campus," said a statement on the university website.

Palushaj agrees and says the NDP kids had the opportunity to have true hands-on experience with robotics and biomechanics.

"It was a day to truly be a college student," she said. "Students even receive college IDs as part of this dual enrollment program, which is still another excellent opportunity for NDP students to experience engineering for a day.

"The CAD courses I teach at NDP also allow our kids to gain college credit and certification in CATIA after the successful completion of their studies," she added.

Palushaj noted that since 2013, Notre Dame Prep has been a CAD academic certification center, primarily with Dassault Systèmes’ 3-D Experience platform, a mainstay of many corporate design and engineering functions, including those in the automotive industry.

She said the college visits are a critical part of the NDP dual-enrollment program.

"But due to COVID, we have not been able to get to UDM for the past couple of years," Palushaj said. "Now that things have opened up, it was such a pleasure once again to show students and relate what they are doing in the classroom to the real world of computer engineering in a world-class university program."
