Social Studies

The Social Sciences Department strives to make students active participants in the learning process in order to grow them into responsible global citizens. A key focus is educating students on domestic, global and cultural issues and the role that the student as an individual can play in those communities.

"Mastery of history and the social sciences is a critical step in (students) understanding themselves and how (they) fit in this world with people from many different cultures." - Margarita Billings, NDP teacher

Did You Know?
  • History. Culture. Economics. Psychology. Law. Government. Notre Dame Prep students have a range of courses—including several at the AP and IB-DP level—to learn about how our world was and continues to be shaped by the people who live in it.
  • Individuals and Societies classes for 6th and 7th graders give students a deeper understanding of our world by focusing on geography, civilizations and cultures, while 8th grade students dive deep into the American experience from colonial times to the Civil War and Reconstruction.
  • In social studies classes, lower school students explore IB strands like Social Organization and Culture, Continuity and Change through Time, and Resources and Environments. Michigan and national history are covered, as are geography, government, and economics. A highlight is the 4th grade “Class Stores” project, for which students conceive, produce, market and sell a product to the school community.
