BREADCRUMB

INTERNATIONALLY MINDED

March 12, 2020

One of the presentations during International Day at the middle school was on the City of Detroit's role in the history of the world. More photos from International Day are below.

The Notre Dame Middle School International Day, an annual celebration of the world and its diversity of inhabitants, was held March 12 on the school's campus.

The day is hosted and organized by the international parents and friends within the NDMS community in partnership with the Parents Club and the staff of the middle school.

According to organizers, International Day was designed to promote the multicultural mosaic of the Notre Dame community and creates harmony between different cultures through an event of mutual respect and cooperation. They said this multicultural celebration provides a unique learning opportunity for students who experience "the spirit of tolerance and respect as they enjoy international celebration dances and entertainment, culinary delicacies, and the rich and varied traditions and heritage of the many cultures that make Notre Dame Middle School community their educational home."

Kala Parker, Notre Dame's associate director of admissions and director of diversity and inclusion, said she was delighted to be able to include a presentation on Detroit during the morning event.

"Along with Katherine Thomas, a middle school teacher and IB-MYP coordinator, we presented a really cool special feature that presented Detroit's history and culture," Parker said. "We covered the history of car production; Woodward Avenue and why it's iconic; the most popular foods produced here; and the impact that Motown had on making music that transcended race, ethnicity and social class — music for everyone!"

School officials said International Day is still another example of "how Notre Dame is educating internationally minded young men and women."
