Future doctor credits NDP teachers, counselors for setting her up for college and for a career serving the community.

Maiti McGreevy NDP’15 graduated with honors from Western Michigan University this past April. She's a member of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in psychology, which was founded to recognize and promote excellence in the science and application of psychology, and Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors association dedicated to serving the community.

In the fall, McGreevy will be attending Alliant International University after receiving a $15,000 scholarship for her first year at the San Diego, Calif.-based school. Her plan is to earn a PsyD, or doctor of psychology, degree with a specialty in substance abuse.

"My goal is to become a psychologist for the federal and/or state prison systems mainly, and work with individuals incarcerated due to substance-related offenses as well as inmates suffering from addiction," she said.

McGreevy credits her academic success in college to the time she spent at Notre Dame even though, she acknowledges, her grades in high school may not have been where she wanted them to be.

"I wasn’t the best student in high school and struggled a lot," she said. "At times I even felt like giving up, but my teachers never let me get to that point. They were so attentive and helpful and seemed to always know when I was having a hard time even if I didn’t realize it back then."

She adds that NDP also provided her with a lot of opportunities she wouldn’t have experienced at other schools.

"Things like free after-school tutoring and those amazing counselors," she said. "I even had a counselor, Mrs. (Margie) Bond, come sit with me in the NDP parking lot one time during senior year when I was so upset that I didn’t get into my No. 1 college of choice. That is a perfect example of how the NDPMA mission permeates throughout the entire organization."

When she graduates from Alliant in 2024, McGreevy will be the second in her family to earn the title of doctor. Her brother Eoghan NDP'06 is an ER physician working for the Henry Ford Health System in the Detroit area. Another brother, Colin NDP'08, lives and works in San Diego, so she's happy there will be a familiar face in town when she gets to Alliant in August.

McGreevy adds that she and her brothers definitely have benefited from their NDPMA experience — and not just academically.

"I can very confidently say that I learned how to be a good person and how to treat others through my amazing teachers at NDP," she said. "I learned kindness, respect and inclusivity from my time at Notre Dame, which I carry with me today and will be with me throughout my career and life. For example, it was the kindness and patience that Mrs. (Sandra) LewAllen reflected; the respect Mr. (Edward) Davis had for all his students, and the welcoming energy Mr. (Ned) Devine brought to the classroom. And there are many more; the list goes on and on!"
