LEADERSHIP, CHARACTER, ACADEMICS

Senior wins one of only eight scholarships from state volleyball association.

Senior Theresa Carrier, who enrolled at NDPMA in the middle school, plays three sports at Notre Dame Prep: volleyball, softball and bowling.

The Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association (MIVCA) announced today that Notre Dame Prep senior Theresa Carrier has been awarded the 2019 MIVCA Educational Scholarship, one of only eight in the state to earn such an honor for the 2019 season.

"This scholarship is awarded to high school volleyball players who demonstrate leadership, character and outstanding academic performance throughout their high school career," said Robin Kozuch, the MIVCA's scholarship chairperson. "It is an honor to be able to award this scholarship to an individual who exemplifies all of the qualities we were looking for."

Irish volleyball coach Betty Wroubel said that, among other fine attributes, Carrier was a critical part of the team's return trip to the 2019 MHSAA final four.

Irish volleyball coach Betty Wroubel said Carrier was instrumental in the team getting back to the final four in 2019.

"Oftentimes Theresa was our go-to person on the court," Wroubel said. "But more than that, she is a very caring and giving individual who always finds time to help her classmates, tutor others or volunteer in the community. In addition, her quiet leadership style was very effective this year with our young team."

Carrier said she was excited to hear of the MIVCA scholarship.

"I am truly honored to receive this scholarship partly because it helps to show that all of my hard work over the past few years has paid off," she said. "Plus, it makes me want to push myself even further, especially in college, to be able to fulfill all my goals."

While she has yet to decide on that college, Carrier's currently got eight possibilities from which to choose since she's been accepted to the University of Toledo, Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, Oakland University, Duquesne University, Michigan State University, Kettering University and the University of Michigan.

However, it does appear that she's at least settled on a goal for beyond college.

Carrier has plans to be a physician after college.

"For my future career, I want to be a physician because I want to care for and help others," said Carrier, who is a multi-sport athlete at NDP (volleyball, bowling, softball). She also said there's no doubt Notre Dame has prepared her well for that future.

"I think Notre Dame Prep has really helped get me ready for college because I've had to balance my sports and extracurricular activities with a challenging schedule, which I'll also need to do in college. Also, I believe the opportunity here to take advanced classes will hopefully make my college classes seem easier."

She's also grateful for NDP's seemingly unending focus on its mission, which she said, will carry forward into college and life.

"I definitely want to continue to give back to my community and to help others in any way possible, whether it be volunteering or providing resources to charities."
