Notre Dame's boys tennis team and school families step up in a big way for the needy in the community.

Notre Dame tennis team members Anthony Ghaith, David Brouns, Cole Bennett and Kadin Kinloch are with Susan Beverly and James McQueen from Lighthouse during today's unloading in Pontiac.

Yesterday and today, members of Notre Dame Prep's tennis team circulated in the community to pick up boxes and bags of donated food items and gift cards from school families.

According to Notre Dame parents Nancy Bennett and Linda Brouns, the items were delivered to Pontiac-based Lighthouse Michigan, which provides emergency shelter, food pantries and housing assistance programs to those in need, among other social services.

"James McQueen, Lighthouse's community outreach and pantry manager, and Susan Beverly, who works in the pantry, were beyond delighted with the 25-plus bags and four overflowing boxes of donated items that included pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and veggies, mac and cheese, tuna fish, toilet paper, baby food, baby wipes, diapers and gift cards among other necessities," said Bennett.

"Lighthouse was thrilled at the team's generosity at a time when so many families are struggling and in such dire need and pleased that our donations were sorted by type of food/item, which facilitates their job of organizing everything so it can be packaged and distributed more rapidly."

The NDP students didn't let the more than occasional steady rain get in their way as they collected the food, unpacked them from the cars, loaded them on racks, and rolled them into the Lighthouse warehouse.

"We are extremely grateful this holiday season to know that so many thoughtful and charitable NDP families who help inspire our children to live the school's mission to 'work with God to form Christian people, upright citizens, and academic scholars,'" said Brouns. "That spirit is reflected in the willingness of our families and kids to donate, collect and deliver desperately needed food and basic essentials to those in need the day before Thanksgiving. Thank you all!"
