Summer girls basketball camp safely moves outside to accommodate current state mandates.

While much uncertainty remains about the upcoming season of school sports, those organizations currently holding summer camps are doing their best to adjust to the realities of the pandemic.

Presently, only two of Michigan’s eight defined regions are in Phase 5 of Gov. Whitmer’s six-phase reopening plan – the upper peninsula and the northern area of the lower peninsula. The remaining six regions are in Phase 4. Phase 4 does not allow for indoor sports activity while Phase 5 allows restricted indoor activity.

For the Notre Dame summer camps program, a few offerings had to be canceled due to current restrictions, but some have adjusted well to the current "new normal."

"We couldn't host things like the girls basketball camp inside until the state goes to Phase 5 or when the MHSAA says we can," said NDPMA Associate Athletic Director Maureen Radulski, who coordinates the school's summer athletic camps. "We are currently at Phase 4. So Tom Kocik, Notre Dame's head girls basketball coach and camp leader, contacted all parents and campers to find out if hosting the camp outside was an option, and he was met with a resounding 'yes.'"

Since Monday, when camp opened, Kocik and his campers have been working at their drills at an appropriate social distance at Notre Dame Lower School, which has two outside hoops in its parking lot.

"So far the weather has been cooperating," Kocik said. "Monday was pretty hot and sunny, so we took a lot of breaks for water and rest. But the girls are doing great. We run a morning session for kids entering grades 3-7 and an afternoon session for those entering eighth and ninth grade. We're just lucky we have this outside equipment that is in great shape and is in an area that is fairly wide open and protected from the roads."

The girls basketball camp continues today and will finish up tomorrow afternoon.
