15th year in a row for an Irish program that won its fourth state championship in November. Team shares "honor roll" award (top 20%) with only one other school in the state for this past season.

The United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today that the 2021 Notre Dame Prep volleyball team once again earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the season. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

It's the 15th year in a row for the Irish, which ended last season with another state championship, its fourth overall. NDP is one of only two teams in Michigan to earn the "honor roll" award for last season, which means they were in the top 20 percent academically. Harper Creek High School in Battle Creek was the other.

According to the AVCA, college and high school teams that receive its Team Academic Award must display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. Notre Dame's team scored a cumulative 3.99 GPA during the school year.

In November at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, NDP put an exclamation point on an incredible season by earning a sweep over North Branch High School in the Division 2 state championship match. It was the team's 64th win of the season as the girls finished the season ranked first in their division.

Betty Wroubel, longtime coach of Irish volleyball and school athletic director is delighted with the award and said all their hard work has paid off.

"We also ended up in the AVCA/USA TODAY Super 25 national high school volleyball rankings," she said. “But it’s our student-athletes' impressive combination of volleyball skills on the court and academic excellence in the classroom that I am most proud of. These girls have accomplished so much, including a large number of community service hours. What a great group of young women!"

The AVCA Team Academic Award, which is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored, was earned by more than 1,200 collegiate and high school volleyball teams this season.
