SUPPORT STILL NEEDED FOR FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES
November 21, 2020; updated Nov. 22, 2020
Support needed for NDPMA family- and alumni-owned businesses and restaurants that are reinventing themselves as struggle amid the pandemic continues.
When Michigan's Department of Health and Human Services mandated on Nov. 15 that eat-in dining at restaurants and bars would be suspended for three weeks, Marie Powers, who along with her husband, John, and their sons Joe NDP'00 and Jeff NDP'04, operates HomeGrown Brewing Co. in Oxford, was not surprised.
"With the rising case numbers, we anticipated that there could be further restrictions imposed and we were already preparing," she said. "But the hardest part is having to lay off employees, which never gets easy."
Now, restaurants and pubs across the state are negotiating a business landscape not unfamiliar after going through a more stringent shutdown in March.
The Notre Dame Alumni Association reached out once again this week to members of the Notre Dame community, including current families and alumni, who own or operate restaurants and small businesses that may have been negatively affected by the pandemic. While many of them have been struggling mightily since last spring, restaurateurs like the Powers took full advantage of the state opening up during the summer months.
"When the Michigan Liquor Control Commission streamlined the patio extension process, we enlarged our patio space temporarily for the summer and fall," Marie Powers said. "This allowed us to add more tables and expand our patio onto a grassy area. That was a huge benefit to us during the warmer weather as most people wanted to dine outside and business was great. It also provided two different outside dining options: one on the original patio and another on the grassy area with picnic tables. We also hosted live music every weekend outdoors."
Powers added that they were set up for the colder months, even before the new state restrictions.
"We decided to invest in two heated igloos for our outdoor patio and we are very pleased with how they turned out," she said. "We worked with a local interior designer, Caveman & Pip in Oxford, who decorated the igloos with pieces that our customers can buy, so it was a fantastic collaborative effort."
Powers said they remain hopeful that they can host indoor dining again soon, but she's not holding her breath.
"We plan to continue with our current offering of carryout/curbside and outdoor dining in the igloos through at least February," she said. "We're hoping by March that the weather will be warm enough to open the patio again and that indoor dining can return to full capacity."
The following list, originally compiled last spring, includes businesses operated by alumni and other members of the Notre dame community.
