A VEX Robotics Competition team made up of two eighth graders and one ninth grader from Notre Dame traveled to near the top of Michigan's Thumb on Saturday and came home with the event's top three awards.

VEX Robotics Team 3333W, called "Power of the Square," and comprised of Brooklyn Haddad (9), Dino Acciavatti (8) and Kevin Carter (8), were at the Harbor Beach Middle School/High School Tipping Point Tournament, an annual event held at Harbor Beach Community Schools on the northeast coast of Michigan's Thumb region.

According to coach/mentor Jerry Palardy, Team 3333W was part of a two-team alliance that won the Teamwork Champion Award, which is given to the alliance that defeats all others in head-to-head competition.

"They also earned the Excellence Award, which is given to the overall best team based on their performance on the field," Palardy added, "as well as the quality of their engineering notebook, knowledge, and interviewing skills when speaking to a panel of judges."

The team completed the awards sweep by winning the Robot Skills Champion Award, which is given to the team with the best driving and programming skills working against the clock while completing a series of tasks with their robot.

The win Saturday advances Team 3333W to the 2022 Michigan State Championship on Mar. 5, where they will defend their 2021 State Championship title.
