Students and staff get together this week for annual statewide summit on student mental health.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, a small team consisting of five Notre Dame Prep seniors, principal Kimberly Anderson and counselor and Be Nice! moderator Denise Mahoney participated once again in the annual Student Mental Health Summit sponsored by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP).

The two-day virtual event aims to provide a unique opportunity for high school principals, counselors, student leadership advisers and student leaders to come together to discuss and seek solutions for student mental health concerns impacting schools statewide.

Notre Dame Prep students Reese Riera NDP'22, Tess Censoni NDP'22, Madison Fraser NDP'23, Jazzelle Yaldo NDP'24 and Erin Dawiedczyk NDP'23 listened to and watched a number of speakers, including keynoters Deborah Gilboa, MD, presenting "Do Stress Better!"; Kim Karr, from #ICANHELP with "Positive Mental Health in the Digital World"; Anthony McLean with "Mental Health in Times of Change;" and a special presentation by Olympic gold medalist and swimmer Allison Schmitt.

Other items on the two-day agenda included topics covering community resources and support networks; stress release, mindfulness and school/life balance; effects of digital media; depression/anxiety and suicide awareness and responsiveness.

Keynote speakers at the virtual conference included, from left, Anthony McLean, Kim Karr and Dr. Deborah Gilboa.

Numerous breakout sessions with students, speakers, administrators and moderators followed a "Parade of Ideas," which was a rapid-fire session of ideas and feedback primarily from students participating around the state.

According to Anderson, the summit is a great opportunity to gain professional insight on this increasingly critical issue and says she and the student team from NDP look forward to sharing what they've learned with the greater NDPMA community.
