TWO MORE AWARDS FOR WROUBEL

Longtime NDPMA athletic director, coach and administrator brings home two prestigious awards from Traverse City; she consistently "puts her responsibilities to Notre Dame Prep and the school community first.”

Betty Wroubel, NDPMA's athletic director, volleyball/softball coach and assistant principal, earned two prestigious awards at the recent Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association annual conference held last weekend in Traverse City at the Grand Traverse Resort Hotel. 

The first, the "State Award of Merit," was from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in cooperation with the MIAAA given to Wroubel "in recognition of outstanding leadership and meritorious achievement in interscholastic athletic administration." The second honor came directly from the MIAAA and it was the "2022 George Lovich State Award of Merit," also for "outstanding leadership and meritorious achievement in interscholastic athletic administration."

Betty Wroubel, CAA (Notre Dame Prep), is a graduate of Clawson High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Michigan University and a masters degree in classroom teaching from Michigan State University. Betty was a five-sport athlete while at Clawson High School, participating in basketball, volleyball, track and field, tennis and softball before going on to play volleyball, tennis and field hockey at Central Michigan University.
 
Betty began her career in education at her alma mater, Clawson, where she served as a teacher and coach. She later moved on to Pontiac Catholic, which became Oakland Catholic High School, serving as the athletic director while continuing to coach. Since 1994 when the school opened, Betty has been an athletic director and coach at Notre Dame Prep while also holding additional roles including assistant principal, co-chair of the health and physical education department, and teacher of sports medicine and leadership classes.
 
Aaron Crouse, CMAA, associate athletic director at Notre Dame Prep, writes, “Betty has embodied the idea of servant leadership during her time in high school athletics as an athletic director, coach and educator. She is a mentor for student-athletes, coaches and other athletic administrators. Betty demonstrates a commitment to providing the best possible athletic experience for the student-athletes, coaches and all other stakeholders at Notre Dame Prep and consistently puts her responsibilities to Notre Dame Prep and the school community first.”
 
During her time at Notre Dame Prep, Betty has been the recipient of the MHSAA Women in Sport Leadership State Award (2016), the MHSAA Allen W. Bush Award (2010) for noteworthy support and commitment to the MHSAA and interscholastic athletics and was the 2020 MIAAA Athletic Director of the Year. Betty is a member of numerous Halls of Fame – she has been inducted by the Detroit Catholic League, Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association, Michigan High School Coaches Association, Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association and the Michigan chapter of the United States Specialty Sports Association. Betty will also be inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association in the summer of 2022.

 
As a coach, Betty led the Pontiac Catholic softball team to a Class C title in 1983 and the Notre Dame Prep volleyball teams to Class B/Division 2 titles in 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021. She has won more than 1600 games as a volleyball coach and 900 games as a softball coach. Betty was named National High School Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2007 and state coach of the year by MIVCA for Class B in 2007, 2013, 2014 and 2017. She also was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2007, the Michigan High School Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2014, the National Federation of State High School Association Coach of the Year for volleyball in 2018, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2019 and National Association for Private Schools Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2019. In 2012, Betty received honors as MIAAA Regional Athletic Director of the Year and, in 2019, was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Michigan High School Coaches Association.
 
Her administrative efforts have also been recognized twice by the Detroit Catholic League with its Tom Kelly Athletic Director of the Year Award in 1994 and 2007. Betty has been a registered MHSAA official in both volleyball and softball since the 1975-76 school year and has held numerous leadership positions as part of the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. She has been a presider for both the MIAAA and NIAAA and has taught numerous LTC classes and presented at the MIAAA conference. Betty currently serves as a co-chair on the MIAAA Exemplary Athletic Program award committee, an honor that Notre Dame Prep was awarded with in 2009 under her guidance. Betty served on the Catholic League’s Executive Board and as an officer for the league for more than 30 years and on a variety of MHSAA committees during her time as athletic director. She has served on the board for MIVCA for more than 30 years and the MHSSCA for more than 25 years. Betty has hosted numerous MHSAA Coaches Advancement Program sessions, has completed all eight MHSAA CAP coaches and mentored young officials as part of the MHSAA Legacy Program.
