Notre Dame Prep band students compete in online Michigan School Band and Orchestras Solo and Ensemble Festival

Every year, Notre Dame Prep band students participate in the Michigan School Band and Orchestras Solo and Ensemble Festival. This year, the in-person festival was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but students’ work did not go unnoticed. The Michigan School Band and Orchestras Association (MSBOA) hosted a virtual festival. The students livestreamed their performances to an online website called OpusEvent. An adjudicator watched the student’s performance and evaluated it based on MSBOA's performance criteria. The students received written evaluations and earned medals for 1st and 2nd division ratings.

“The time preparing for solo ensemble performances is also the time of greatest improvement and effort by the members of our band. This process helps our band to become a more skilled ensemble,” said Joe Martin, NDP band director. “In my 23 years of teaching band at Notre Dame, I am a huge believer in the value of this special opportunity for growth. I was glad to take advantage of the opportunity for our band students to perform their solos at the virtual festival.”

Several students who participated in the festival shared their experience.

"Having a virtual solo and ensemble festival made me realize how helpful technology can be in times like these. However, I do think that the absence of having a live audience and judge can affect musicians and how they perform. Ultimately, I am glad I could still participate in this event and see firsthand the integration of technology into the music world,” said sophomore John Milback.

"With the pandemic, many of us students have had to forgo our activities, which is why I am so grateful that the band had the opportunity to participate in this year's virtual festival. It was an excellent way for my classmates and I to creatively express ourselves while receiving feedback to improve as performers and musicians,” added senior Madeline MacIntyre.

Congratulations to all the Notre Dame band students for their outstanding performances and achievement.
